MEEEE and Classroom Digs!!! Better late than NEVER!

Ok sooooo... I know that I am a day late and a dollar short with this post, but I had an assignment due (working on my doctorate degree) that I was literally STUCK on and I ABSOLUTELY had to finish that first before I attempted to do ANYTHING else! I know you guys understand, so let's move to ME and my fantabulous self {smiling from ear to ear as I type this}.

1. I am a 4th grade Writing/Language Arts teacher from TEXAS. Where EEEEverrythang is BIGGER and BETTER!  Whoop there it is!

2. One amazing thing about my teaching career is that I have been teaching now for 8 years and initially NEVER wanted to be a teacher! I was a double major in Psychology and Health Administration and the plan was to work on my master's {because there's really no money in Psychology without having credentials} and find a job that I could do in the mean time to support my shopping habits. I thought (while kicking and screaming)... why not teach? Sooooo that's exactly what I did! I went through an alternative certification program and began teaching 3 months later and I have LOVED every minute of it!

3. Photography gives me LIFE! I love everything about it. I am pretty good at it and can use any type of device that takes a snap shot and make something out of  it! I am seriously considering doing children's photography as a side business. I am still working at it because I don't like to do anything short of amazing, so in the mean time I will keep practicing because I get better and better with time. Here are a few pics that I have recently taken and yes I know that are graduation pics!

4. I know # 3 was about photography, but I have to state that I am a SELFIE fanatic. I absolutely adore selfies on INSTA (GRAM). Because I love taking pictures of myself, having somewhere to go and look at others who enjoy it as much as I do is the BOMB dot COM!

                       My latest selfie

5. Reality television is something that I kind of feel bad to admit {not really} is my favorite. I DVR so many reality television shows its a tad bit ridiculous. I mean... who can resist trash tv at its finest!

6. I am the oldest child and grand child (on both my mom and dad sides of the family), and the oldest great (on my mom;s side). That's pretty neat huh!

7. My favorite color is Cerulean Blue.

8.  I coach cheerleading and want to open my own all-star cheerleading and dance gym.

9. I am a really good dancer.

10. One of my favorite things to do each year or whenever I get the opportunity to do so is to travel. There's something about visiting a new place and experiencing something different!

I haven't finished my classroom just yet, but it's coming along! I literally did not start gathering new things for my classroom until late last week, but I knew that I wanted to change up my room this year. I have been using the same decorations, colors, and theme for the past 3 years and I felt it was time for a change. I am keeping the rock star theme because I absolutely LOVE the different ways that you can incorporate so many things with the theme.
AND... It didn't help that I have SO many rockstar related things left over from the past 3 years that I REFUSED to waste, so needless to say my classroom has a rock star theme with a new twist of colors, patterns (stripes and Chevron-my FAVORITE ever since it became popular last year), and decorations. My colors are black, lime green, turquoise, blue (as close to cerulean as I could get), purple, gold, and gray.

These are just a few pics of my room and some things that I plan on using or incorporating into my classroom decorations.

My college board. We have to do one every year and this is what it looks like so far. I need to add a few pictures and facts. (Prairie View A&M University)

      Grammar Wall Pennants

             Accent Flowers

Bulletin Board /Part of Grammar Wall

Meeting area rug (I haven't decided on the one I want)

             More Pennants

Daily 5 - Matches last year's theme- Not sure if I want to change them

Well... This is where I am so far, but I will get it done by the middle of next week. I will post final pics when I am done!

Getting BACK into the GROOVE!!!

Well...HELLO!!!

It has been a VERY long time since I made a post! My move to a new district last year and working on my doctorate degree was a bit cray cray overwhelming and time just seemed to never sit still long enough for me to get my self  TOGETHER! I kept up with my bloggy friends (every chance I could get), but as for me keeping up with my own blog...well...I didn't do so well.

I wanted to start out by writing a quick post because I am working on some fun stuff over at Blog Hoppin for the SUPER FUN activities for Teacher Week 2013. The information was posted in advance, so that everyone can make their post all faaaaannnncccy and fabulous. Soooooooooooo get your posts ready and let's do this!

I am also working on getting my blog a MUCH needed make over, so that my blog looks purrrrrtttttyyyyy! Unfortunately, I am not the only one that needs wants a blog make over, so I will have to be on a waiting list. I don't mind waiting because I know it's a process, but I am antsy and want to get it done.

Oh...last thing...I will be uploading pics of my classroom reveal next week, so stay tuned!

Turn Up the Music Linky Party....a month later!!!!!

 Teaching Maddeness

Amanda at Teaching Maddeness had a Turn the Music Up linky party back in June and since I LOVE music and absolutely have to have it playing in my classroom (even though I'm a MONTH late) I couldn't resist linking up.

Here are a few of my musical favorites:

Pandora- I think Pandora is one of the most FANTABULOUS internet resources when it comes to music!! To top it off...the site is free!! You do have to be mindful that not all districts allow access to Pandora (no bueno), but for those who are fortunate (and I do mean fortunate) you have a jewel that's only a click away for your listening pleasure.

 - You can create stations for just about any artist or genre and Pandora automatically creates a  playlist that includes that artist or genre and others that are similar.
 - The system allows you to stop, pause, skip, and continue at your leisure.
 - The best feature of all is that it saves all of your stations for you!

iPad/iPod Playlists- My iPad goes with me everyday to school. I use it for EVERYTHING such as: transitioning ques (station clean-up, timing, changing classes, during writing time, etc.), small group instruction, as an extra computer for students, to model specific lessons, and most of all for our musical entertainment in the classroom. The kids absolutely LOVE listening to the abundance of genres and artist that I have on my classroom playlists.

Here are a few artist/genres on my playlist (in no particular order):

1. Lifescapes- Caribbean Steel Drums
2. Mind Therapy
3. Miley Cyrus
4. Jonas Brothers
5. Barry Louis Polisay
6. HSM Soundtrack- High School Musical  (any other soundtrack from a family/kid movie will do)
7. Micheal Jackson
8. The Beatles
9. African Drums (instrumentals)
10. Taylor Swift
11. Vanessa Hudgens
12. Switchfoot
13. Jack Johnson (Be very careful...some songs are inappropriate, so preview before hand)
14. Donald Harrison (Jazz)
15. Smooth Jazz (Pandora)
16. Nature Sounds  (Pandora)
17. Nuttin But Stringz (violin players)
18. Any instrument (piano instrumentals, violin, guitar, etc.)
19. Katy Perry
20. Justin Bieber
21. One Direction
22. Demi Lovato
23. Adele
24. Shane Harper
25. Any music from Disney or Kidz Bop will always be a hit!!

I am going to stop at 25, but the list can go on and on and on. One of my tips for finding cool music is to pay attention to what's playing in popular stores or on popular t.v. shows (when they show the name of the songs/artists during credits or commercial breaks) and go from there!!

On an educational tip I have used some of these songs in the classroom for skills such as visualization, plot structure, characterization, as well as writing prompts. It works beautifully! ESPECIALLY when you use catchy songs like Yellow Submarine by the Beatles for visualization (see video below).

~Here's how it can be a mini lesson or a quick review, but be sure to time this activity because it shouldn't be long at all.~

1. Allow your students to listen to the lyrics (and do nothing else)
2. Have them listen again and take notes (mental or jot them down)
3. Draw out what they have visualized from the lyrics
4. Share their pics (it's pretty cool what they come up with)
5. Discuss/Turn it into a writing activity/or whatever your teaching heart desires (smile).

You will have kids sparatically humming this song all year long!! It's amazing how well they remember the skills they have been taught just from those musical connections.
Well...that's all folks!

Happy listening!

The Liebster Award WOOHOO!!

I want to give a big ole' THANK YOU to Heather @ Loose Shoelaces for giving me the Liebster Award!!
Seeing that I don't blog as much as I would like (note to self...I AM going to do BETTER) I am always thrilled when someone thinks awesome things about my blog!!

The goal of the award is to spotlight up-and-coming blogs with less than 200 followers. The rules are:
  1. copy and paste the award on your blog
  2. thank the giver and link back to them
  3. reveal your top 5 picks and let them know by leaving a comment on their blog
  4. hope that your followers will spread the love to other bloggers
These are the five blogs that I think are firing up on the blog scene (in no particular order):

Fun in Fourth Grade- I really love Cindy's passion for teaching. She is guinely concerned about her student's success and makes sure that she does what she can to make it happen. Go Cindy!!

My Life as a Fifth Grade Teacher- Lindsay is SUPER cool because she is a TEXAS teacher!! Whoop! Whoop! I think she has good ideas and I can totally relate to some of the stuff she deals with. I definitely check out her blog to see if I can get new info.

Imagine in 4th Grade- Dawn is really new to the blog world. The fact the she started a teaching blog to connect with other teachers reminds me why I started to blog. Happy Blogging Dawn!!

Shepherd's Shining Stars- I LOVE her integration of technology!! Some of the sites she has recommended  and classroom activities are pretty cool.

Wells' Tale of a 4th Grade Nothing- Super cute blog! She has been apart of the blog world for a couple of months. She has gooooood give-a-ways, so go and check her out!!

Check out these blogs bloggey peeps because you will come across some GOOD stuff !!
